SUMMARY OF 1966

SEARCHES
Last year, 19 members made a total of 2,476 searches of selected areas of the
sky One member (David levy, Montreal) made about half of the searches and,
in addition, spent about 6o hours making telescopic searches for comets.  Al-
though nothing was discovered tv members during the past year, there were several
"false alarms". On two occasions telegrams were sent to the IA.U. but dis-
coveries were never confirtned. The f ollowing members searched during the past
year (after the name is the Centre and the total searches male): Steve Ashe,

Jon Finkel, Montreal, 19; Reginald Gallant, Toronto, 4; Mark Gerasimoff,
Windsor, 5; Richard Gregory, Montreal, 10; Carl Jorgensen, Montreal, 18;
Doug King, Montreal, 4; David Levy, Montreal, 1271; Justin Long, Montreal, 28;
Hugh Maclean, Niagara Falls, 390; A.J. Morehouse, U.S.A., 1; Leo Nikkinen,
Montreal, 3; Stephen Simon, Montreal, 33; Norman Sylvester, Hamilton, 64;
Vic Williams, Montreal, v6; Miss I.K. Williamson, Montreal, 64; Mrs. K.
Zorgo, Montreal, 92.

Since this section started receiving reports in 1962, a total of 10,894 searches
have been made.  Totals for each year:
1962 - 1,954     1963 - 2,299     1964 - 2,222     1965 - 1,943    1966 - 2,476

OBSERVATIONS During 1966, 61 observations were reported for three comets:

PERIODIC COMET FINLAY, 1886 VII  During the next few months, observers with
telescopes over six inches may wish to look for this comet.  It is well placed
in the morning sky.

NOTES

Your Co-ordinator was wiable to attend the General Assembly this year and regrets
being unable to meet some of the Comet and Nova searchers who were in Montreal
then.   Are you planning to visit EXPO?   Although there is nothing directly con-
nected with comets and novae there, the subject of Astronomy is represented.
